Personal statement
Grace Williams’s work reflects her own personal journey as an artist and person. She uses her art as an outlet for healing, awareness, and change. To her, her work is more than just creating a beautiful thing. Her work is a window into her perspective of life and how she sees the world. However, she also uses her work to show different perspectives of life from those around her. To her, her work is a voice for those that go unheard and bring to the surface the many realities that exist in our world. Some of these realities could be limitations that women face, the complexity of the psyche, or the fragility of our planet. These realities come in many forms, but there is one thing that connects every reality of our world. This connection is Earth and humanity. Earth is our home which we all share. Humanity is something that every person gets to experience. Grace hopes that someday her work will inspire the hearts of the few to spark a change in the many.
The media, mediums, and techniques Grace uses in her work is vast. Throughout her work there is a wide variety of materials used. Examples of some of these materials are all manner of drawing mediums, painting mediums, design programs, fabrics, metals, wood, and photographic mediums. The materials needed really depend on the project at work.
Grace’s process is similar to the scientific method. It is a long and tedious process. However, her process works to produce the best results possible. The process starts with the initial inquiry about a given project. This questionnaire serves as an initial look into what the project is, what elements need to be included, and what the desired outcome would be. This is usually done with the client. From here the research starts. The research works to explore the many possible ideas of the project and where it could go. These ideas then become initial sketches. After the sketches and ideas are laid out, first renders are made. There are usually a few different rendered ideas to provide options not only for the project but for the client as well. The first renders are shown to the client or other colleges for a Q&A. This first Q&A is where the path of the project is laid out. It is here the best design is picked and critiqued. After the next advanced renders are formed. Again, another Q&A is run to see what is working and what is not. This check is where the final designs are starting to be solidified. Once this check is completed a first print or model is created. This first print or model presents the designs in real life and helps to work out the kinks. The first print or model will always be shown to a client to show the progress and ask about any final details needs. The final steps are the final renders and products. This process has many steps, but these steps ensure that the client and the artist are happy with the work. This process was also designed to be flexible and to flow with the project. Grace’s process, as described, is the foundation for how she completes work.
The inspiration for Grace’s work is a combination of history, nature, and humanity. In history we can learn from past to create a better and more beautiful future. Nature provides the blueprints for life. Humanity is the connection that every person on this planet shares. These elements are the building blocks for her work. The hope that lives in Grace’s heart is that anyone that sees her work will be inspired and at the very least stopped to think. Her work is meant to be a stimulus for change.
